Apparently the 2018 Beetle is unavailable with a manual in Canada. Which is a bummer, because the car I was really taught how to drive stick on was a diesel New Beetle. Granted, no one will care about this news, and clearly no one was buying Beetles with a manual, but still, it’s a bit sad.

That’s ok because you guys do get some cool cars that we don’t get.

For example, in Canada you can get an Elantra GT with a manual transmission and panoramic sunroof for $22k (Canadian). Down here, if you want the sunroof EGT, it’s 26k US, and automatic-only.

You also get the Micra, non-electric B-Class, Mazda5 (which is still available with a manual), and the Rondo (also available with one).

At the risk of losing oppo points, I have to confess that when the new beetle was first released I really liked it.

After a while, they became lame to me. Dismissed them completely. Disliked them, even.

Then I saw this post and started thinking about all of the dope-as-fuck modded classic beetles, and wondered what the hell happened? Why no slammed, chopped, widebody, slick, smooth, creative cool new beetles? Are sunflower hubcaps and/or large black vinyl dots the best new beetle owners can come up with? I wondered if the “new” beetle is truly a lame car, or does it just tend to be owned by lame people?

So I googled “slammed widebody new beetle”

...and found that I just might not hate the car so much after all.

I just wish they’d engineer them all over again and put the engine and drivetrain in the correct spots. I’d love a New Beetle if it were rear engine, rear wheel drive, manual transmission.

These are achievable things. Performance, safety, and efficiency can all be maintained

its a great design. shame it was marketed as a ‘girl car’ and carries the stigma as such.

Agreed.

...and I would also approve of an AWD turbo version of said car. AWD turbo 6 cylinder, even.
